Hi, Donna -- I'm not sure I understand exactly what you're planning to do. If you're planning to embroider an alphabet onto fabric, the Pfaff 1229 won't do that -- it doesn't have an internal alphabet. If you're using an appliqué technique to attach pre-made letters, that would probably work out fine.

Compared to modern machines, the 1229's embroidery capabilities are quite limited, though it's possible to work up many attractive patterns and designs. It's mostly a superb utility sewing machine. I bought it 25 years ago precisely because I didn't need (or particularly want) a machine embroidery capability.

It's a wonderful machine, though, and I doubt you'll regret dusting it off and using it!

Hi, I have a Pfaff 1229 and am ready to use it after it's been stored for a long time. I remember at the time I bought it, the selling point was the embroidery capabilities, and now I'm wanting to sew some lettering on velvet and was wondering if this machine can do this?

thanks for your help.
